With original front wrapper title and second title-page, text set within an ornamental typographic border. (Wrapper title repaired at outer margin, one section browned, 2 leaves scorch-marked). Contemporary South American morocco-backed boards, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in 2 (boards a little faded and stained, corners rubbed, small pits in upper board). Provenance : Dr. Cidad y Sobron (blindstamp on title, annotation on p. 5, and presentation inscription on first blank to:) -- Dr. Don Francisco Azar y Azanza. EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST PRINTING IN SPANISH OF MALASPINA'S VOYAGE TO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST from the journal of Uruguayan-born Viana, a sub-lieutenant on the voyage, as prepared by Viana and his heirs. This is the only detailed account of the voyage before Novo y Colson's edition of 1885. It does not cover the entire voyage but ends in February, 1794 in Montevideo where Viana seems to have left the expedition. The correct dates of his diary are on the wrapper title while those on the second title are incorrect. For some reason, his account was printed on the travelling press of the army besieging Montevideo during the war between Argentina and Uruguay in 1849, and hence its great rarity. Preliminary pages contain lists of personnel including scientists and artists, scientific instruments, stores and supplies, and the logs of Descubierta and Atrevida , 1789-1794. The voyage as related was around Cape Horn and north to Yakutat Bay, Alaska, Prince William and Nootka Sounds, the Philippines, Australia and Tonga, before returning to the coast of Peru, the Falklands and Tierra del Fuego to Uruguay. The presentation inscription on the first blank is near-contemporary and a footnote by Dr. Cidad y Sobron is penned on a preliminary leaf. Lada-Mocarski 134; Ferguson 5228. Not in Hill or Sabin.
