France and Marcel Proust and with further inscription by the comtesse de Noailles to Monsieur Lucien Carpegnol (?) 'Anti-dreyfusard', on the front free end-paper of Dante Alighieri, [La Divina Commedia] con l'espositione di Christoforo Landino, et de Alessandro Vellutello . Venice: 1564. 2° (305 x 210mm). A unique French literary association. Anna-Elisabeth de Noailles (1876-1933) was a poetess and novelist, who is here celebrated by Anatole France, his son, and his muse, Mme. de Caillavet, the poet Paul Hervieu, Marcel Proust and his friend Louis de la Salle, the princesse de Caraman-Chimay, who was the model for the duchesse de Guermantes, together with Colonel Picquart, a prominent figure in the Dreyfus case, and her own husband. The later dedication from the comtesse has a line 'en souvenir des amitiés françaises' signed by Maurice Barrès (1862-1923), the novelist and politician.
