FOX, Charles James (1749-1806). Autograph letter signed (in text, twice, "Mr. Fox"), as Foreign Secretary, written in third person, TO HENRY LAURENS, St. James, London, 6 August 1783. 1 page, bifolium , with Laurens's response written on blank integral leaf.
FOX, Charles James (1749-1806). Autograph letter signed (in text, twice, "Mr. Fox"), as Foreign Secretary, written in third person, TO HENRY LAURENS, St. James, London, 6 August 1783. 1 page, bifolium , with Laurens's response written on blank integral leaf. THE SHAKY FOX-NORTH COALITION is four months old when Fox pens this third-person note to the American diplomat Henry Laurens, then in London on the unlikely mission of seeking a loan from British bankers even while a state of war continued to exist between Britain and America. "Mr. Fox presents his compliments to Mr. Laurens, and if He will take the trouble to call upon Mr. Nepean at Lord North's Office, He has been acquainted with the two Points which Mr. Laurens mentioned to Mr. Fox yesterday, (viz. the Account certified by Mr. Cruden, & the Order for the Cabin of the New York Packet Boat in the Month of October,) & will receive Lord North's Directions upon them." Laurens's reply--transcribed on a blank integral leaf--reminds Fox that "the principal point of Mr. Laurens's address on the 5th is that on which Mr. Fox said he would take his Majesty's pleasure & communicate the Result." John Cruden was the British official appointed to oversee Laurens's sequestered estate after the fall of Charleston, South Carolina in 1780. Evan Nepean was the government official to whom Laurens submitted his claim for compensation against the Crown in August 1783. [WITH:] LAURENS, Henry. Document signed twice ("Henry Laurens"), 3 March 1770. 1 page, folio (22 x 16in.), scalloped edges at top . An indenture for sale of land in Hamstead, S. C., by Laurens to Thomas Fuller Together 2 items . (2)
