Beschreibung:

Lot of 4. Three identified with label in lower margin of recto, fourth ID'd on verso. Several have 1864 dates. CDV of Hugh Ward, Blacksmith Co. C., "Lincoln Cavalry." Backmark of B.W.T. Phreaner, Hagerstown, MD. CDV of Jerome Bell, Co. b, Lincoln Cav. Photographed in what appears to be civilian evening wear by Riker, Bowery, NY. Note on verso "Captured at Berryville 10/63." CDV of Peter Trowbridge, Co. B, 1st NY Cav. Also in civilian clothes, backmark of Lawrence, Newburgh. CDV of Elias Burr, Co. F, 1st NY Cav. Backmark of Marken's Gallery, Frederick, MD. The 1st New York Cavalry was recruited primarily from New York City from very early in the war by Col. Carl Schurz under special authority from President Lincoln, for whom the unit was designated. The regiments were mustered in through July and August 1861. They served with distinction under many cavalry commanders - Stoneman, Pleasonton, Sheridan, Kilpatrick, Crook, Averell - in over 230 battles and skirmishes from Pohick Church (VA) to Appomattox. They lost heavily at Strasburg (VA), Winchester, New Market and Piedmont, but captured more prisoners and property than any other cavalry regiment.
