includes a wonderful small folio cabinet card album entitled Photographs of South African Generals & Other Celebrities with 37 cabinet cards, most with English photographers including noted British soldiers and politicians: Generals Lyttleton, Hutton, Hilyard, Chermside, Balington, Clery, Butler, Marshal, Wauchope (killed at the battle of Magersfontein), Hunter, Carew, Kelly-Kenny; Colonels Dalgety, Kekewick, Dick-Cunningham (killed at the battle of Dundee), Wynme, Wingate, Ricardo, Dundonald, Paget; Commanders Egerton (killed at Siege of Ladysmith), Ethelson (killed at the battle of Graspan), Captain Milner, Lt. Roberts, son of S.A. Commander and Chief Lt. Gen. Horatio Roberts (killed at the battle of Colenso), `Earl of Ava, ex 17th Lancers (killed during the siege of Ladysmith), Prince Francis of Teck, Rudyard Kipling, Sir Alfred Milner (the man behind the war), Sir W. MacCormac, W.G. Steevens. Album also includes the following Boers: President Kruger, & Steyn and General Joubert. The second album is folio-sized in half-leather and black buckram with 72 photographs, ca 1890, most 9" x 10", from the British Raj. Images of both native and British regular troops on parade, ancient ruins and temples, officers at work and play and more. The third album is a horizontal 4to in half leather and green buckram has 109 photographs, 4 watercolors, clippings from periodicals, several photo post cards and campaign ribbons including Boer War & WWI items. Most are 6" x 8" and show testing of various small arms such as the Maxim Machine Gun at the R.S.A. factory at Enfield. This album dates from 1895-1906 with a few later additions. The fourth and final album is a folio in black buckram entitled Diamond Jubilee Naval Review with sixteen 9" x 12" photogravures of the event. Provenance: Ex James E.
