1p, approx. 6.25 x 6.5", Ft. Washington, 4 May 1797. Signed as Lieut. Commanding. Forage return for one Dragoon hors [sic] for four days commencing the first and ending the 4th of May 1797. J. Rogers Sergt. With Harrison's note below: The Qurt. Master will have forth eight Quarts of Oats Agreeably to the above return. Wm H. Harrison. Lt. Commd. William Henry Harrison (1773 - 1841) was born into the Virginia planter "aristocracy," and was not the log cabin-dwelling, hard cider-drinking frontiersman portrayed in his campaign. His career path began with a study of medicine (the only President to do so), but he joined the Army in 1791 and worked his way up the ranks. He served as an Indian fighter in the Northwest Territory, and after the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1795 he remained at Ft. Washington on garrison duty until resigning from the Army in 1798. While there, he married the daughter of a local judge (John Cleves Symmes), and later was instrumental in the division of the territory into Ohio and Indiana, becoming governor of the newly-formed latter state. This note from his period of military duty in Cincinnati. Condition: Expected folds and toning, with a few darker areas. Overall VG or better.
