Engraved titles, 2 engraved maps, 117 steel engraved views after Bartlett and William Purser; all with original tissue guards (few plates with pale foxing at or near margins, else bright). Full period green straight–grain morocco ruled in gilt and paneled in blind, raised bands gilt, gilt titling and filets in compartments, all edges gilt, concealing a FORE–EDGE PAINTING of a Byzantine chapel in each volume (joints and corners a bit rubbed, spines a little darkened and dried). Provenance: Arthur Charles Lowe (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of this superbly illustrated travel book of the Middle East from the early 19th century.
