FORE-EDGE PAINTING] A Selection of Psalms and Hymns with favourite and approved tunes for the Use of Bedford Chapel near Bedford Square. London: W[illia]m. Crace, [1791]. Period straight-grained red morocco, covers simply gilt, flat spine with lyre motif, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With a double fore-edge painting applied, with a well-painted view of Windsor Castle when fanned in one direction, and of St. Paul's in the other. 8 3/4 x 5 1/3 inches (22 x 13.5 cm); engraved frontispiece, title, ix, 120 pp. Light wear to binding, leather uniformly toned, the fore-edge doubtless applied later, but of some considerable age. With the bookplate of George Gostling on the front paste-down, and some old notes in ink regarding ownership in the 1860s. This is presumably what is now referred to as St John's Chapel, Bedford Row, which had an evangelical Anglican congregation, undoubtedly of some wealth, to judge from the rather refined binding and elegantly engraved contents. ESTC N62307. C
