A survey of African-American history for “young folk”, highlighting significant figures from Benjamin Banneker and Sojourner Truth to W.E.B. DuBois, Alain Locke, and Carter Woodson. Fauset was an educator and anthropologist who played a significant role in the Harlem Renaissance, though his book did not attain the popularity of Jane Shackelford’s Child Story of the Negro, published four years later with Woodson’s imprimatur.
