Title: For Freedom: A Biographical Story of the American Negro Author: Fauset, Arthur Huff Place: Philadelphia Publisher: Franklin Publishing and Supply Co. Date: [1927] Description: 193pp. Illustrated with color frontispiece and black and white text drawings by Mabel Betsy Hill. Original red cloth binding, with striking front cover illustration by Black master artist Aaron Douglas Revised edition, first published in 1927. A survey of African-American history for “young folk”, highlighting significant figures from Benjamin Banneker and Sojourner Truth to W.E.B. DuBois, Alain Locke, and Carter Woodson. Fauset was an educator and anthropologist who played a significant role in the Harlem Renaissance, though his book did not attain the popularity of Jane Shackelford’s Child Story of the Negro, published four years later with Woodson’s imprimatur.
