Fong Chung-Ray (Feng Zhongrui) (Chinese, b. 1934). Large abstract oil on canvas painting titled "29-31," depicting large blocks of cool blue, white, and black. Signed along the lower right. Regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Chinese painting, Chung-Ray began his formal training at the Cadre College of Arts and Crafts during his time serving in the Taiwanese military. While in the military he gave a false birthdate of one year earlier, 1933, in order to qualify to join. In 1961 he became a member of the Wuyue Group (Fifth Moon Group) and joined them in participating in a multitude of exhibits. Throughout his life, he has experimented with a vast array of mediums from ink to acrylics to oils. The present work is part of his oeuvre occurring after 1989 when he developed a technique in which he applied acrylic paint to plastic sheets and then transferred that work to a sheet of paper. These works combine themes of traditional Chinese painting with Western abstract expressionism, the movement Chung-Ray believes is the closest spiritually to the former. Unframed; height: 48 in x width: 36 in. Framed; height: 49 1/4 in x width: 37 in. Condition Request Condition Report Please contact us for a detailed condition report.
