Beschreibung:

AA.VV. FOLK TALES - TURKISH. The story of the famous Ferhad and Shirin. Turkish folk tales in Arabic script, text and 8 illustrations lithographed in Istanbul. [FOLK TALES - TURKISH]. The story of the famous Ferhad and Shirin. [with] Stories of the secret of Mahfiruz Sultan. Istanbul, the lithographic printing office [Henri Cayol?], 1271 A.H. [= 1854/55]. 4to in 8s. A wholly lithographed book from a calligraphic and pen-decorated manuscript written in Turkish in Arabic script, with 8 lithographed pen-drawn illustration plates (numbered by the text page they face), and elaborate pen-work decoration on the title-page, the opening of the text and the final page, and smaller decorations scattered through the text. The pages progress from right to left as usual for a book in Arabic script. Contemporary boards cut flush with the leaves, sewn at 2 stations without supports, shell-marbled sides, with a contemporary paper label on the front board with the manuscript title "Ferhad and Shirin. Turkish.". Spine reinforced with later brown cloth. 64 pp. With a contemporary manuscript note on the title-page, in the same hand as the label on the front board, signed "E.A. Tibbetts". The paper is slightly browned but the book is otherwise in good condition. Some quires show damage and repairs to the gutter folds, and the sewing has come loose in one, leaving the central two bifolia detached (each together with a tipped in plate). The spine was apparently damaged and has been reinforced with brown cloth, and the boards show minor damage. An extremely rare early lithographic book from Istanbul, with two Turkish folk tales, the main one with 8 illustrations.
