This Plan of the City of Philadelphia and Environs is Respectfully Inscribed to William Sansom, Esqr. Who has contributed more than any other Citizen to Embellish the same by the Number, Beauty and Uniformity of his Buildings.
Philadelphia: Desilver, 1819. Two-sheet engraved map (650 x 650 mm). Engraved view of the Statehouse. 86 references (but numbered 1-64). Condition : tissue-backed, light browning and soiling. Provenance : Martin P. Snyder. rare and decorative early 19th century map of the city. Folie’s map of 1794 was “published as late as 1819 after the plate had come into the hands of one of the first antiquarian booksellers of Philadelphia, Robert Desilver” (Snyder). Desilver, however, greatly improved the map to provide the public with an updated view of the city. Compared to Folie’s original of 1794, the growth of the city is evident. Besides having many more references, the intersection of Broad and High (i.e. Market) Streets shows the more familar Centre Square as layed out by Benjamin Henry Latrobe Phillips, Descriptive List of Maps and Views of Philadelphia 183a; Snyder, COI 152B. Not in Rumsey.
