Publisher: Date: 1930's-60's Description: With: 4 original typescript plays (3 carbon type and 1 directly typed) by Dell: Runaway; The Cautious Amorist (from a novel by Norman Lindsay ; Family Circle (with B. Marie Gage from a novel by Lindsay); and one other lacking title leaf; each ranging from about 50 to 100 pages (on recto sides only), occasional hand-corrections (likely by Dell), circa 1930’s. * 6 letters to Floyd Dell (2 typed and 4 hand-written), most are more than one page. * 8 cards signed to Dell. * 2 postcards from Dell to his wife. * Plus, several other paper items (typed poems, inked poem to Dell, receipts, cards, several letter correspondence for Dell’s wife, bank information for Dell’s wife, etc.) * 48 books bound in cloth (6 in jacket) by various authors: Upton Sinclair, Norman Lindsay Somerset Maugham, Lenin, Jack London, Mark Twain, Kipling, Huxley, etc., The Scientific Dream Book, etc.; of which: 11 are inscribed to him (8 by the author including Upton Sinclair, Elinor Wylie, etc. and 1 by the translator), 17 with Dell’s ownership signature (several of those with his bookplate), 7 with just his bookplate (but 1 book by Ellen La Motte with a card inscribed to Dell from Jean La Motte), and 13 without his name inside (but are from his library). * A personal blank book (originally made as a Recipe book), cloth bound with loose leather protector, containing 8 pages of original typed poems, inscribed on front pastedown “To Marion from Floyd with love, 1967.” * And, 5 issues of Writer’s Digest (1934-35). Floyd Dell (1887-1969) the American socialist / activist and editor who, with Max Eastman and others, was in charge of the radical journal, The Masses. They were against the U.S. involvement in WWI. Dell’s journal was under pressure from the U.S. government to change their policy and when refusing to do so, the journal lost its mailing privileges. Dell knew and/or promoted fellow socialist authors: Frank Norris, Jack London, Charles Edward Russell, David Graham Phillips, Upton Sinclair, Theodore Dreiser, etc. And later, wrote a well-received biography on the Pulitzer Prize winning Upton Sinclair. Lot Amendments Condition: General wear overall. Nearly all the books with some type of smoke wear (chiefly at spines which are now darkened), edge wear, many are leaning or hinges cracking, soiling; paper items (including letters) and manuscripts with less wear than books; from good to very good.
