Flemish School 17th Century The Virgin, the Christ Child, and St. John the Baptist with the Donors and their Children Oil on canvas 56 3/4 x 83 1/2 inches (144.2 x 212.2 cm) Unframed Provenance: Said to have belonged to the Scottish art dealer William Buchanan (1777-1864) of Pall Mall, London Later said to have belonged to the theater impresario Andrew Small and to have descended by inheritance in his family Britnell Galleries, Toronto [Sale] Phillips, Montreal, June 26, 1980, Private collection, Canada [Sale] Waddington's, Toronto, December 9, 2009, Purchased at the above sale by the present owner This painting is traditionally thought to represent Charles V, Duke of Lorrain, and his family. C
Glue relined. Restoration around the edges to address frame abrasion. Otherwise generally in good condition, with some repaired tears and holes. The largest repaired tear (ca. 18 inches) runs horizontally through the legs of the child John the Baptist and continues into the cloak of the boy standing to his left. Two repairs in the background at upper right, above the lady's head. a few others elsewhere. There is a vertical line of restoration to the face of the Virgin; a few touches of restoration elsewhere.
