Fleming, IanFrom Russia, With Love. New York: Macmillan, 1957
8vo. Publisher's beige cloth, stamped in black; lightly bumped at head and foot of spine, lightly soiled to rear cover with some transfer to inner jacket. Pictorial dust jacket; bumped at head and foot of spine, small chip to spine (approx. 20 x 5 mm) not affecting lettering, minor toning and soiling.
First American edition, inscribed "To Al | By, with, & from | Ian."
"Seriously, I mean it: "From Russia, With Love" is a real wowser, a lulu, a dilly and a smasheroo. It is also a clever and above all sustained piece of legitimate craftsmanship. My chapeau is not only off to you, it is over the windmill." (Letter from Al Hart to Ian Fleming late 1956).
From Russia, With Love was the first book in the Bond series where the UK and US editions shared the same jacket design. Al Hart was the instigator of this, having observed Fleming's appreciation of Chopping's design. Jonathan Cape then sent Macmillan Chopping's proof artworks to use on the jackets of Goldfinger, For Your Eyes Only (lot 1127) and The Spy Who Loved Me (lot 1129) as well as his art for Thunderball (lot 1128) to use on the jacket for Gilt Edged Bonds (lot 1130).
