15 x 23.25 in., silk, 6-7-7-6-7-6 star orientation, ca 1889. Framed to 20.25 x 28.75 in. The 39-star flag never legally existed and is probably the result of a flag maker betting on the accession of the Dakota Territory as a single state in 1889. In reality the Dakotas joined the Union as two states simultaneously, were joined by Montana and Washington within the next nine days, and the United States officially went from a 38-star flag in late 1889 to a 43-star flag in 1890. Provenance: From the Estate of Kenneth Erwin, Portland, Michigan Condition: Various minor stains, including near the center of the canton, and the fourth stripe down just to the right of the canton.
