FITZGERALD, F. Scott. Tender is the Night . New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. 8 o. Original green cloth, gilt-lettered on spine (minor wear to spine ends and extremities); dust jacket (minor edgewear, spine panel slightly dulled). Provenance: Margaret Turnbull, see previous lot. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, IN FIRST STATE DUST JACKET. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FITZGERALD TO MARGARET TURNBULL on the front free endpaper: "F. Scott Fitzgerald pays homage to Margaret Turnbull, remembering many mornings in the laborious construction of this book when it was refreshing to stare from my smokey study and see her working in her garden. May 17th 1934." The Fitzgeralds stayed at La Paix from May 1932 to November 1933, and its solitude offered Scott a more condusive environment to work than their previous residence at Ellerslie. Zelda split her day between La Paix and the Phipps Clinic, where she was undergoing treatment for her mental illness. It was during this important period at La Paix that Fitzgerald was able to complete his second masterpiece, Tender is the Night --making this inscription all the more poignant. The smoke reference may refer to the fire at La Paix in August 1933, which was accidentally started by Zelda while burning some things in an unused fireplace there. The fire damaged the second story and roof at La Paix, but Fitzgerald rescued his manuscripts from destruction, and managed to convince Bayard Turnbull to leave the reconstruction until he completed work on Tender Is the Night . A VERY FINE ASSOCIATION COPY. Bruccoli A15.1.a; Connolly, The Modern Movement 79.
