FIRST EDITION OF COOK'S SECOND VOYAGE. COOK, JAMES. A voyage towards the South Pole, and around the World. Performed in his majesty's ships the Resolution and Adventure, in the years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. In which is included, Captain Furneaux's Narrative of his proceedings in the Adventure during the Separation of the Ships. I-II. London (W. Strahan - T. Cadell) 1777. First edition. 2 volumes. Large 4to (284x225 mm). xl, 378; (8), 396 pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Cook by J. Basire after William Hodges 63 engraved plates, maps and charts (33 folding), 1 folding letterpress table (all, some minor spotting to margin of the portrait, some minor tears to folds of maps, 1 spotted map in vol. I, 1 spotted plate in vol. I [The fleet of Otaheite... ], 1 with minor dampstains to margins, plates otherwise with some slight spotting, about 4 plates shaved with some text loss [as usual], some offsetting to text). Contemporary full brown calf, partly worn and rubbed, boards with gilt border, inner gilt dentelles, upper joint to vol. I partly split or starting, richly gilt red spine in compartments with title labels, minor damages to edges, gilt edges. With green silk ties. Endpapers partly browned. Title page in vol. II browned with minor marginal tear, last page partly browned in both volumes, text with some slight spotting. 2 volumes. The official account of Cook's second voyage, written with the aid of John Douglas It includes the first recorded crossing of the Antarctic Circle and the discoveries of Easter Island, the New Hebrides and New Caledonia. The beautiful plates of views and inhabitants after drawings by William Hodges Together with a loose portrait of Cook engraved by Bartolozzi. James Cook (1728-1779), British navigator and famous explorer. His achievements in mapping the Pacific, New Zealand and Australia radically changed western perceptions of world geography. Amongst others he discovered and charted New Zeeland and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia and made his first voyage around the world in 1768-71 in the ship Endeavour. In the second voyage 1772-75 he looked for the southern continent in the ships Resolution and Adventure. His third and last voyage in the years 1776-80 in the ships Resolution and Discovery, he was trying to find the North-West Passage, but instead found and explored Hawaii. The journey was completed without him as he was killed in Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii, 1779. Photo.
