Beschreibung:

By Ryszard Krukowski Slaughter Mountain, San Carlos Reservation, Arizona With colors more vibrant than opal, fire agate does not run the same risks of fading, cracking or scratching. Not a well known gem, fire agate, a variety of chalcedony, is through to form by volcanic activity when hot water saturated with colloidal silica and iron oxide invades cavities in the host rock below the earth’s surface. During the cooling process chalcedony with iron oxide begins to grow on any available surface with many shapes and colors being formed by the mineral impurities. Known as schiller, the alternating silica and iron oxide layers, diffract and allow light to pass and form interference of colors known as “fire”. The iron oxide is what gives this gem its characteristic brown body color. Polishing fire agate is done in such a way as to follow the natural contours of the stone until only the fire is visible. This very large, yet wearable free-form pendant which displays a range of colors, weighing approximately 48.0 carats and measuring 35.0 x 27.5 x 6.5mm, drilled and suspended from a cord necklace; together with an unusual free-form ring carved of fire agate which displays a range of spectral colors, reinforced with a silver band to the interior, size 7.
