First Editions The Ossian cycle of epic poems, supposedly translated from ancient Gaelic but actually written by James Macpherson (1736-1796), Scottish writer, poet, literary collector and politician, considered the first Scottish poet to gain an international reputation. In this copy, the preliminary advertising leaf in the first work is bound after p. xvi rather than after the title-page, as sometimes occurs, and the final advertising leaf is not present.
