Fine coromandel wood game compendium, England, circa mid 19th century. 8.25 x 13 x 7 in. (210 x 327 x 180 mm). Coromandel box, brass keyhole and hinges (a few minor cracks, a few nicks along edges, lacks key). The interior is composed of a removable tray holding a set of satinwood checkers, a cribbage board and pegs, dominoes, and 3 sets of dice. Another removable tray composed of 4 compartments is underneath and holds 2 Whist markers, 2 Bezique markers, and 4 decks of cards. The bottom of the box is divided into 5 compartments that house yellow, red, purple and white game counters in various shapes, 6 painted lead horses and three painted lead obstacle course pieces for use in the game 'Steeplechase', and a satinwood gavel, a satinwood tumbler, 5 cards, and several small bone dice for the game 'Bell and Hammer'. The front of the box opens to reveal two rows of ebony and satinwood chess pieces. Secured to the inside of the lid by a hinged wooden strip and two metal fingers is a red and black morocco quarter-fold game board, decorated in gilt, that can be used for chess and checkers, backgammon, and Steeplechase.
