FINE BINDINGS] TWAIN, MARK (=CLEMENS, SAMUEL L.). The Writings of Mark Twain . New York: Harper & Brothers, 1929. The Memorial Edition, number 48 of 90 sets, with a leaf of manuscript in Twain's hand inserted as issued, this leaf being a list of jottings headed "Memory" and listing various names such artist E.A. Abbey, quoting Emerson "The red slayer thinks he slays," and miscellaneous ideas (for stories?), the whole marked with various letters suggestive of a mnemonic game, the leaf with the penciled date of 1870 in another hand. Thirty-seven volumes. Full red morocco by Stikeman, the spines tooled and lettered in gilt, the covers panelled in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt turn-ins, top edge gilt. 8 3/4 x 5 5/8 inches (22.5 x 15 cm); frontispieces and plates. The gilding chipped away on the top edge of many volume, a few nicks and scuffs but an attractive set. A large and finely bound set of Twain, rare offered at auction, with an unusual manuscript leaf bound-in. C
