.36 caliber, 7.5" octagonal barrel, S/N 31300 (mfg. ca 1853). Blued and color case hardened finish, silver-plated small brass triggerguard and backstrap, varnished deluxe burl walnut slim profile grips. Six-shot percussion cylinder with traditional Naval engagement roll scene, Colt's Patent marking and serial number. One-line barrel address reads -ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY- with engraved frame marking reading COLT'S / PATENT. Matching numbers throughout with external numbers with an additional punch dot above, below or after them. Revolver engraved in the early Colt factory style number 2 attributed to Gustave Young with dense flowing foliate scrolls on the frame and barrel web, with the triggerguard, loading lever knuckle and butt engraved en-suite. Additional engraved details are present on the backstrap, with a fan-motif at the top of the grip frame and geometric boarders around the beveled edges of the triggerguard. A dog's head appears in the central foliate scrolls on the reverse of the barrel web and the hammer is engraved with the "wolf's head" motif. The hammer spur is finely checkered as befits a deluxe engraved percussion Colt. The revolver is contained in a very rare rosewood veneered case with a French fitted dark green velvet interior with two compartments. The larger one contains a sealed package of D.C. Sage produced cartridges and the smaller contains a Japanned tin of percussion caps with a green Eley Brothers label marked as being produced "exclusively for Colt's Pt Belt and Pocket Pistols." Additional accessories include a dual-cavity Colt's Patent marked brass mold, a C & JW Hawksley marked dual compartment powder flask with two bottom compartments containing caps and round balls and an "L" tool. A really lovely factory engraved Colt Navy with a fine period casing and accessories. Condition: Fine. Retains much of the factory original blued finish with thinning and wear, with most of the loss from the barrel and cylinder. Barrel web retains much of the bright blue and the frame has a dull smoky blue-gray patina with some traces of case color in the protected areas. The brass retains most of its original silver and all of the markings and engraving remains clear and crisp. The cylinder scene remains in fine condition and shows almost no loss. All of the safety pins on the cylinder remain in place with two showing some damage, all of percussion nipples remain in fine condition. Action is crisp and the bore is fine. Highly figured walnut grip in fine condition retaining much of the varnish with minor marks. Case and accessories rate fine with the case showing some scattered bumps, dings and mars on the exterior and some fading and wear to the interior. Accessories all remain in very good or better condition and complement the set nicely. Altogether a fine and early factory engraved cased 1851 Navy.
