FIELDING, Henry (1707-1754)]. The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews and of his Friend Mr. Abraham Adams . London: Printed for A. Millar, 1742. 2 volumes, 12 o (159 x 95 mm). With two leaves of publisher's advertisements at the end of vol. I, and one each at beginning and end of vol. II. Contemporary English vellum gilt, covers with gilt sawtooth borders, gilt floral ornaments at each corner, spine in six compartments, morocco lettering piece in one (label a bit worn), a repeated gilt panel in the rest, marbled endpapers and edges; cloth slipcase. Provenance : purchased through Dawson's, London at Sotheby's, London, 8 April 1968, lot 70. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION BOUND IN CONTEMPORARY VELLUM. Fielding's first novel began as a skit on Richardson's 'Pamela.' Cross III, p. 305; Rothschild 844. (2)
