Second edition. Moscow: Typographical Company, 1788. 8° (235 x 145mm). 3 folding maps. (Occasional mostly marginal spotting). Contemporary half calf (worn, spine defective, rubbed). Provenance : contemporary manuscript shelf-mark ('+' near the hinge of the front paste-down) -- A. Smirdin (early and late bookplates) -- Rossica (bookplate on rear paste-down) -- Paul M. Fekula. THE SMIRDIN COPY. F. Prokopovich was a poet, leading churchman, and official during the reign of Peter the Great, whom he supported on the foundation of the Holy Synod, and his policies on the secularization of the state. A professor at Kiev Academy, and archbishop of Novgorod in 1725, his influence lasted until 1836. Smirdin's collection was particularly strong on books from the libraries of Peter I, Elizabeth, and Catherine II. Fekula 2383 (this copy); Sopikov 12788; Smirdin 2503; SK 7735. Not in Drage.
