Provenance : Carl Petersen (Serendipity catalogue, number 8). THREE PAGES OF FAULKNER'S TYPESCRIPT FOR "GO DOWN, MOSES." INSCRIBED TO DAN BRENNAN on one sheet: "To Dan Brennan William Faulkner July 19, 1940 Oxford, Miss." One page is headed "GO DOWN, MOSES" and contains 195 word on recto, 112 words (plus seven cancelled) on verso. It and a second page (162 words on recto, 237 words on verso) contain early drafts of material found on pages 369, 370, 372 and 373 of the published book, as well as material deleted from publication. The third sheet (that includes Faulkner's inscription to Brennan) contains brief passages on each side (73 words and 40 words) from "Was," pages 7 and 8 of the first edition. [ With: ] FAULKNER, William. January 23, 1939 cover of Time magazine, inscribed "Dan Brennan Next time you come fish-hiking we'll catch a big kitchen Faulkner." -- FAULKNER, Estelle. Autograph letter signed ("E. Faulkner") to Dan Brennan, 23 January [1940]. One page, 4to . Estelle forward the Time cover and tells Brennan that Faulkner was happy to oblige his request to sign the cover and that "we all like you fine." [ And with: ] A black-and-white photograph of William and Jill Faulkner with Dan Brennan, Oxford, Summer 1939, sitting on the Faulkners' front porch. Brennan writes on the back that Faulkner "mixed the silver cup mint julep for me but he drank beer -- he was suffering from insomnia..." Brennan first met Faulkner in 1939 while hitchhiking. In the Petersen catalogue, p.13, his letter (not included in this lot) recounted the kindness he received from the author and that Faulkner wanted to talk about the "labor problems up north." Faulkner had read and critiqued some of Brennan's pastoral verse. Brennan was present in the Summer of 1940 when Faulkner wrote Do Down! Moses "while I sat around on the library floor reading books in his library, and then he read it the next afternoon, after finishing it outdoors. He read it aloud with Jill sitting on his lap, and after the reading said, 'Gee, that's kind of sad...' Then he drove me all around Oxford... and then went on an evening picnic. It was while he was writing GO DOWN MOSES and about Tommy Turl that I fetched his false starts out of the waste basket and asked him to sign them." Petersen 8.
