(32), 1-396, (42, lacks last blank leaf); (8), 1-968, (4, 2 last blank) pp. 2 engraved titles, 11 folding engraved plates (in vol. I), 6 woodcut folding plates (in vol. II, all), 2 engraved portraits in text, 26 woodcut portraits in text, of which 18 full-page, woodcut initials and vignettes. Contemporary vellum, partly worn, partly defective ties, spine with manuscript titles, speckled edges, partly cracked in the hinges. 4 leaves mended in the margins, a few leaves with some worming in lower margin, some spotting, foxing and browning, some marginal dampstaining. 2 volumes. Löwendahl, China illustrata nova. Supplement: 1570. Not complete, lacking part III. First edition. A second edition of vol. I appeared in 1703 and an abridged English version appeared in 1694 /95. Deals with the Portuguese empire in Asia, ritual and customs in China, India, and South East Asia. Manuel Faria y Sousa (1590-1649). Avid chronicler and polyglot, Faria y Sousa lived in Madrid for most of his life in the service of the Spanish Crown. Here he collected books, dispatches and manuscript materials of all kinds in preparation of his chronicle of the Portuguese empire across the globe. On his decease in 1649, Faria y Sousa's significant archive of books and manuscripts returned to the custody of his son who prepared the present work for publication. From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013).
