Text diagrams, 17 engraved plates by J. Basire, 13 folding. (Some foxing to plates and very occasional spotting to text.) Vol. II: 5 plates by J. Basire, 2 folding. Publisher's green cloth publishers bindings (not uniform), gilt-lettered spines (some minor wear). Provenance : J.M. Paine (inscription and inked stencil in vol. I); John Formby (inscription and bookplate in vols. II-III); Signet Library (inscription in vol. II). FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM of the 29 series of papers published by Faraday in Philosophical Transactions between 1832 and 1852. The collection includes all of Faraday's remarkable successes, including his distinctions between the different forms of electricity, his first theory of electricity as a function of interparticulate strain, his discovery of electro-magnetic induction, and his research on magnetism (See also lot 893).
