CGC certified: VG- (3.5). Cream to off-white pages. Mexican version of Famous Funnies #212 (Eastern Color, 1954). Color contents. Stories translated into Spanish. Frank Frazetta cover. CGC Census: Only graded copy. Apocryphal sales data: International buff Joey Anuff says "a later edition sold for $1800 in early 2021." Frank Frazetta is an anomaly in the world of pre-Code comics. Unlike most comic artists of the day, who labored in relative anonymity with almost no leverage or bargaining power, Frazetta's name on a comic book cover was guaranteed to spur sales. The ring of the cash register was music to publisher's ears, and Frazetta was able to name his terms with more authority than almost any other artist in the profession. Frazetta's artistic gifts were such that the funnybook ghetto couldn't contain his talent for long, and he soon crossed over to more the more remunerative fields of book cover and movie poster art. His series of Buck Rogers covers for Eastern Color's Famous Funnies were the wedge that helped widen Frazetta's opportunities in the 1950s. These seven covers caught the eye of Li'l Abner creator Al Capp one of the most successful cartoonists in the lucrative field of newspaper comics, and soon Frazetta was ghosting for Capp, drawing hot hillbilly honeys Daisy Mae and Moonbeam McSwine to the delight of Capp's 60 million daily readers. Frazetta's solo covers for La Prensa's sci-fi reprint rag, Fantastico, are among the most sought-after mid-1950s Internationals. These esoteric treasures are poised to pop as awareness slowly seeps into the mainstream. A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now.
