Lot of 5, including: James Fisk Jr., an American businessman and financier, who has commonly been referred to as one of the "robber barons" of the Gilded Age. View published D.C. Pratt, Aurora, Illinois. View published by H.A. Kimball, Concord, NH, titled on the verso label Pike - The Hampton Falls Murderer. The pictured man is Joseph L. Pike, who murdered a a wealthy elderly couple for whom he had previously worked on their farm. He attacked them in their home with an axe, and struck the 73-year-old wife square in the middle of the forehead. An account published in the May 23, 1868 edition of the Cincinnati Enquirer called it "a cold-blooded, brutal murder, that has no parallel in the annals of crime in New Hampshire." Pike was hanged Nov. 9, 1869. Read more here: http://www.newspapers.com/clip/527452/josiah_l_pike__murdered_in_hampton/ Wade Hampton III (1818-1902), portrait by George Barnard Charleston, SC. Hampton was a colonel of cavalry in the Confederate Army, Gov. of South Carolina (1876-1879), and US Senator (1879-1891). He is perhaps best remembered for his actions as governor. The first Democrat elected following Reconstruction, he employed a paramilitary group called the Red Shirts to intimidate and suppress black voters, setting the tone that would be followed throughout the South for the next 75 years. An anonymous portrait of Ida Lewis (1842-1911), the keeper of the Lime Rock Lighthouse in Newport, Rhode Island. She was the most famous lighthouse keeper of the 19th century, and is credited with saving at least 17 lives. In honor of her service, Lime Rock was renamed Ida Lewis Rock, and the Lime Rock Lighthouse to Ida Lewis Lighthouse. And an amateur homemade view of Sen. George Henry Williams, made from copy portraits on printing-out paper. Condition: Soiling and edge wear. Williams' is two prints on printing-out paper placed in a homemade mount.
