Giving news of the campaign in Yorkshire, and his recapture of Leeds for Parliament; Fairfax observes that pillaging in Wakefield was prevented 'by Capt: Winges good gover[n]ment', and proposes to 'open a free passag to Hull', thanking his father for sending a captain to assist him 'having many things heavy upon me & being growne w[i]thin these few days more unhealthful'. The capture of Leeds on 23 January, tightening Parliament's control of the West Riding, was Fairfax's first important victory in the Civil War and he went on to take Wakefield on 21 May.
