12 works in one volume, oblong 4to (23.2 x 32.8cm), engraved throughout, manuscript list of contents ("Inhaltsverzeichniss") to front free endpaper, manuscript numbering of the editions ("1"-"12") in upper margin of titles, contemporary or slightly later green half morocco boards, green morocco label gilt to upper cover ("Schubert's Lieder 1tes Heft"), op.13 lacking some pages, some spotting and thumbing, small tear with loss to lower outer corner of title-leaf of op.3, small tear to lower margin of last two leaves of op.14, trimmed by the binder, extremities worn
The control numberings present here on the back of opp.3, 4, 7, 12, and 14, have been the subject of considerable debate: positive identification of the composer's hand from such short markings is always open to dispute. However, we can say that these markings are present only on the earliest issues of Schubert's songs published as opus 1 to opus 14, dating from the years 1821 and 1822, and that they are authentic in the sense of having been made by Schubert or on his behalf by his brother Ferdinand, or by Leopold Sonnleithner, and perhaps a few others.
