Lot of approx. 40 silver gelatin photographs, ranging in size from 1.75 x 2.75 in. to 3.5 x 5.5 in., mostly informal photographs and snapshots of men, women, and children playing or posed with various instruments; or listening to record players, radios, and other devices. Highlights include: 3.25 x 4.25 in. "trick" or "spirit" photograph showing two men in a domestic interior, each holding an instrument, with a ghost-like figure of a third young man standing between the two. This photograph was used on cover of the book, ...i listen to the wind that obliterates my traces: music in vernacular photographs, 1880-1955, published by Steve Roden, 2011. Accompanied by second "trick" or "spirit" photograph, 3.5 x 5.25 in., of a man seated at a piano, with what appears to be his ghost-like presence seated to the left of the piano. A woman sitting in a rocking chair is visible just behind the man seated at the piano. 2.5 x 3.5 in. photograph of a one-armed violinist. Interesting series of at least 8 photographs, 2.5 x 3.5 in., showing a young musician in a bedroom setting with his cello and other instruments. In some photos, he can be seen playing the cello. Other photos show the cello displayed with an assortment of other instruments and objects.
