Performed in the years 1805, 1806, 1807, by Order of the Government of the United States Author: Pike, Zebulon Montgomery Place: Denver Publisher: W. H. Lawrence & Co. Date: 1889 Description: 394 pp. Steel-engraved frontispiece portrait of the author; 2 mounted albumen photographs; 4 maps (2 double-page). (4to), 26.8x20.5 cm (10½x8¼), original gilt-lettered blue cloth. Reprint of the first English edition, which was first published in 1811. Pike's expedition was the first U.S. Government-sponsored exploration of the Southwest, and is second in the annals of American exploration only to Lewis and Clark. The two mounted photographic plates are of the House Joint Resolution authorizing this republication, and a striking view of Pike's Peak. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine and adjacent portion of rear cover rubbed and stained; rubberstamp of R. Stocks Watson on front endpaper and half-title; some marginal darkening to contents, else very good. Item number: 271284
