Title: Excursions in North America, described in letters from a gentleman and his young companion, to their friends in England Author: Wakefield, Priscilla Place: London Publisher: Printed and sold by Darton, Harvey, and Darton Date: 1810 Description: xi, [1], 420, [4] pp. Folding engraved map. (12mo) 17x10 cm. (6¾x4"), period tree calf, spine ruled in gilt, morocco label. Second Edition. A fictional work by a popular author, but giving a fair idea of the state of knowledge of the American West just before the discoveries of Lewis and Clark. In the preface, it is stated that the "chief sources of... information have been derived from Jefferson, Weld, Rochefoucault, Bartram, Michaux, Carver, Mackenzie, and Hearn." The map is the same as that in the first edition, with 1806 date and W. Darton & J. Harvey as publishers. It is well engraved, and Warren Heckrotte comments that "She uses Arrowsmith's map of N.A, but with some atavistic additions - such as Lahontan's Long River, and another lake about where Great Salt Lake is." The map measures 36x39 cm. Provenance: Slatkine, Geneve, 12/67 References: Howes W-21. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine darkened, ends chipped, joints cracked; some darkening and light foxing to text; the map is detached, but quite clean, with one short marginal split at a fold. Item number: 266952
