Many of the items bear Van Vechten's bookplate. A multi-media artist and photographer, Max Ewing met Carl Van Vechten in 1922 and befriended many figures in the transatlantic avant-garde, including Theodore Dreiser, Jacques Rigaut, Jean Cocteau and Gertrude Stein.
