Engraved title vignette after Pier Leone Ghezzi engraved graduated scale plate, 47 full-page copperplate engravings by Giulio de' Musi after drawings by Eustachi and Pier Matteo Pini. (Some marginal browning, occasional foxing and staining, mostly marginal, plate 39 with marginal tear just catching plate mark.) Original boards, uncut (rebacked in modern calf, boards worn and stained). Provenance : J. Summers (18th-century signature and purchase note in pounds on front free endpaper); Warden H. Ayer (signature on front free endpaper and title-page, dated 1934). FIRST EDITION. This series of 47 plates were prepared in 1552 to illustrate a projected book by Eustachius ( ca . 1505-1574) entitled De dissensionibus ac controversiis anatomicis , which was never realized before Eustachius's death. Only the first eight copperplate engravings were published during Eustachius's lifetime, in his Opuscula anatomica (see lot 85). Early in the 18th-century the plates were found and brought to the attention of Giovanni Maria Lancisi, who published the full series of 47 plates along with his notes.
