EUSEBIUS Pamphili (260?-340?). Evangelicae praeparationis , in Greek. - Evangelicae demonstrationis lib. X . Paris: Robert Estienne, 1 April 1546 [titles dates 1544 and 1545]. 2 parts in one volume, 2 (328 x 232mm). Ornamental headpieces and initials, printer's device [Schreiber B1] on both titles, another version [Schreiber 10] on final verso. (Very small marginal wormhole in first 2 quires, short marginal tear in 2 leaves, marginal stain in 4 leaves.) 18th-century mottled calf, gilt spine with red leather label, red edges (rubbed, worn at extremities). Provenance : a few early marginal annotations; Greek library stamp and cancellation. EDITIONES PRINCIPES of both works, superb early examples of Estienne's first grecs du roi font, which had premiered in 1544. The fine, elegant type was commissioned by Franois I from Claude Garamond for printing Greek books from unpublished manuscripts in the Royal Library. Three works by Eusebius, the Ecclesiasticae historiae and the two present works, were the first in this printing programme, the first major Greek texts printed by Estienne as King's Printer. The fine headpieces and initials were considered by Updike 'among the best of the printed decorations used in the sixteenth-century'. Adams E-1082 and E-1087; Schreiber Estiennes , 78. DIOGENES LAERTIUS (fl. first half 3rd century). De vitiis, decretiis, & responsis celebrium philosophorum , in Greek. Basel: Hieronymous Froben, 1533. 4 (203 x 146mm). Historiated initials, ornamental headpieces, printer's device on title. (Lacking final leaf with repeated printer's device, section removed from upper corner of about 33 leaves with some loss, stain on one leaf.) 16th-century German blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, arms of Frederick, King of Denmark on upper cover with initials 'M S B' above and date 1594 below, unidentified armorial on lower cover (small stains). Provenance : M.S.B. (binding, inscription erased from title); annotations made after Notae (1593) on the text published by Isaac Casaubon.
