Flemish blind panel-stamped calf (sl. rubbed), spine on 4 raised bands (cracks in spine & hinges, chips lacking on head), [12]-297 (=299)-[1] ff. (1 corner torn off without loss). Very good copy.
Rare 2nd (1st Antwerp) ed. of Claude de Seyssel's French trsl. of Eusebius' chronological church history, 1st published by G. Tory in Paris (1532). The trsl. is based on Rufinus's Latin rendering of 401 A.D. Printed in bastarda (Vervliet BA, B2 en B5), all thought to have been cut by De Keyser himself. The 2 larger types as well as the midddle size one tought to be used only from 1534 on, make their 1st appearance in the present book. Title within woodcut border with De Keyser's printer's device. With 10 woodcut decorated initials + about 10 repeats (2 gothic and 2 roman series). Interesting binding with on each cover the same panel : the inner one is an acorn cresting panel with 4 1/2 acrons on each side and flowers not attached to them, the outer one had a bird centred at the head and foot flanked by foliage, incl. the corners, 2 heads in profile on each sideflanked by ornaments. The central panel resembles those cited in Foot, Goldschmidt, Oldham, all dated c. 1527-34, but the outer panels differ greatly. Ownership entry "SGS MGS/ H. Spanofsky " dated 1555 and " Christ. Tenngler zum Rampblsperg und Schaltenstain" (Bavaria) dated 1563. Ref. NKr 884. Pettegree 11968. USTC 7514. Cp. Foot, Henry Davis Gift 293, Goldschmidt 134, Oldham, Blind panels of English binders, Ac. 3.
