(Small wormhole in first and last few leaves, marginal paper flaw in first leaf, occasional light spots.) 19th-century blind-tooled sheep over thin boards (surface abrasions, splits at joints). Provenance : some contemporary annotations paying particular attention to Origen -- ?18th-century inscription washed from top of second leaf -- George Abrams (not in his 1989 sale; booklabel). Fourth edition. The Historia ecclesiastica is the most important history of the church written in ancient times. It is particularly valuable as a source for the history of the early church and various early sects and movements; in many instances it is our only knowledge of figures and events dating from the first three centuries. This edition is one of only six books printed by Schall at Mantua. It was his last book, and followed his other five editions after a hiatus of 4 years.
