ESTIENNE IMPRINT] CASSIUS DIO COCCEIANUS. Dionis Nicaei, Reru[m] Romanarum a Pompeio Magno, ad Alexandrum Mamaeae filium epitome ... Paris: Robert Estienne, 1551 [BOUND WITH] [Ek ton Dionos tou Nikaeos Romaikon historion apo Pompeiou Magnou mechrïs Alexandrou tou Mamaias]... Paris: Robert Estienne, 1551. First edition of Guillaume Leblanc's translation, the English and Greek editions bound together (the Greek text first appeared in 1548). Contemporary calf gilt, with the supralibros of Francois de Haslay, Archbishop of Paris, with his monogram in the four corners of the central panels of the covers, spine gilt, all edges gilt. 9 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches (25 x 16.5 cm); the first work [6], 280, [10] pp., collating A-Z a-o^[4]; the second 357, [3] pp. collating a-z A-Y^[4]. Recased with original spine retained, a small excision (affecting text) on m1 of the first work neatly infilled, small faint marginal dampstain, some early marginalia, faint old stamps on title of a French military establishment. The second work is one of the last Greek texts to carry Robert Estienne's Paris imprint, and is a magnificent speciment of Greek printing. The text is based on the 11th century abridgment of Cassius Dio's work by Joannes Xiphilinus. A copy of these two works, bound interleaved, was in Jefferson's library.
