ESTE, Ercole II d' (1508-1559). Autograph letter signed to his father Alfonso d'Este I, Duke of Ferrara, Rome, 28 September 1522 , describing to his father his first meeting with Pope Adrian VI, to whom he had been sent to request revocation of Alfonso's excommunication, 2¼ pages, 285 x 213mm , integral address panel, traces of seal. (small tears at lower margins neatly repaired and strengthened), modern black morocco box. This touching letter from the 14-year-old Ercole d'Este II to his father Alfonso I describes the young boy's first encounter with Pope Adrian VI at S. Maria del Popolo, the beginning of what was to be a successful mission to have his father's excommunication from the Church lifted. Alfonso sent his son, in the company of Enea Pio, Matteo Casella and Ludovico Cato, to Rome to ask the Pope to lift the excommunication which had been made first by Giulio II in 1510, following Alfonso's opposition to the Church's efforts to restore Ferrara to the Church's authority; it was confirmed again by Leo X in 1521. When Adrian VI ascended to the papacy in 1522, Alfonso petitioned through his jurist Ludovico Cato to have the interdict suspended in July 1522. To further his aim for full reinstatement in the Church, Alfonso then sent his son Ercole to the papal court. Ercole handled his first meeting with the Pope brilliantly, showing great deference and obeisance. When the Pope arrived at the church for mass, Ercole stepped forward as a servant to help him dismount by holding the stirrups of the horse and to assist with his robes. Ercole's subservience was rewarded with the Pope's benediction. Ercole, clearly pleased, describes the day's events to his father in the present letter. The boy's excitement is palpable in the postscript he appends, stating that he believes he will be granted an audience with the Pope the following day. In fact Ercole was granted an audience the next day, when he eloquently delivered his oration on behalf of his father; soon thereafter Adrian VI reinstated Alfonso in the Church.
