Provenance : armorial bookplate with motto "Semper Progrediens." LIMITED EDITION, number 175 of 300 copies. Prince d'Essling's own collection of early Venetian woodcut books served as the basis for his bibliography. "It is the most exhaustive bibliographical study of illustrated books of any place, country, or period hitherto published and set new standards for description. It is also the most luxurious bibliographical publication of its century: 300 copies were printed on heavy handmade paper in folio size, illustrated with more than 2,000 reproductions in the text and on 74 plates. The last volume was published posthumously by Charles Gérard, his librarian, four years after the prince's death" (Breslauer & Folter 144). A FINE COPY. (7)
