ERRARD, JEAN. La Fortification dmonstre et rduicte en art... dition seconde revue et augmentee. Paris, 1604. Engraved title and 47 engravings in text (most three-quarter page) of diagrams for fortification, harbor defense and lines of fire, floral and historiated woodcut and metal-cut cribl initials and factotums, woodcut head- and tailpieces. Folio, contemporary vellum, soiled, title laid down, I2 torn (repaired), minor repairs and light dampstaining in the margins of a few leaves, others well-thumbed at corners, the engraving on Cc2v cropped. Second edition of the first book devoted exclusively to military fortification. Editions in French and German were published in Frankfurt earlier the same year. Rudolph II's imperial privilege dated 1603, printed at the end of this edition, gives permission to print the work in French, German, Latin and Italian. Errard was the principal military engineer under Henri IV, to whom the work is dedicated. Brunet II:1050. VERY RARE.
