ERNEST EDWARD MILLS JOYCE (1875-1940) The South Polar Trail. The Log of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition . London: Duckworth, 1929. 8° (213 x 136mm). Half-title, frontispiece and 31 leaves of plates, 1 full-page chart with errata slip. (Light spotting to edges.) Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt (head of spine slightly bumped). Provenance : Arthur Marshall (presentation inscription on half-title). FIRST EDITION AND PRESENTATION COPY of 'the principal firsthand account of the Ross Sea shore party of Shackleton's 1914-17 expedition' (Rosove). The presentation inscription in black in on the half-title reads 'With Best Wishes To Arthur Marshall Esq. From an Auld Antarctic Penguin, who has spent many years in that Grim Land of Silence 1901-4 1907-9 1914-17. Ernest.E.Mills Joyce London May 12.1933' and is followed by the further inscription 'This book consists essentially of a transcript made by me of a log I kept during many months on the trail. The reader need not look for literary grace or journalistic effusion in this story. Parts of it may perhaps be dull reading, for life during many months was monotonous in the extreme. Momentous events are treated with crude brevity, for the grimness of the worse conditions can only be faintly shadowed forth , for weeks half mad and utterly exhausted with cold and hunger and exertion, frostbitten and scurvy stricken companions must call on your imagination to read between the lines.
