From an Auld Antarctic Penguin, who has spent many years in that Grim Land of Silence 1901-4 1907-9 1914-17. Ernest.E.Mills Joyce London May 12.1933' and is followed by the further inscription 'This book consists essentially of a transcript made by me of a log I kept during many months on the trail. The reader need not look for literary grace or journalistic effusion in this story. Parts of it may perhaps be dull reading, for life during many months was monotonous in the extreme. Momentous events are treated with crude brevity, for the grimness of the worse conditions can only be faintly shadowed forth , for weeks half mad and utterly exhausted with cold and hunger and exertion, frostbitten and scurvy stricken companions must call on your imagination to read between the lines.
