ERMAKOV, Dmitrii Ivanovich (1846-1916), CACOULIS, and LOKHTERGRANDT. A group of photographic views and scenes of Crimea and the Black Sea region, Tbilisi, and Sevastopol, ca. 1890s. 32 albumen prints on 23 mounts, some with captions in Cyrillic in the negative, most c. 140-230 x c. 200-280mm on card mounts 330 x 435mm, with manuscript captions in German in the mount, but one 140 x 100mm on a mount 215 x 130mm. (Prints with occasional light fading, the mounts with some light wear and light soiling near the edges, one mount with a long tear not affecting the print.) Provenance : Walter Stechow (1852-1927, pioneering radiologist, army doctor, and physician to Kaiser Wilhelm II; by repute).

The scenes and views include: the palace at Bakhchisaray photographed by Lokhtergrandt (active Sevastopol 1889-1895), the Bakhchisaray fountain that inspired Pushkin, a group of Cossacks, ethnographic scenes in Kuban region, views of buildings in Odessa, including the Pushkin monument, the Duma and Museum, and five views of Trabzon by Cacoulis, including the St Sophia mosque, and a view of the eastern side of the port.
