Nach dem Studium bei Hofmaler Joseph Anton von Gegenbaur in Stuttgart, um 1844 bei Johann Gottfried Brücke oder Wilhelm Brücke in Berlin sowie 1849 an der Königlichen Akademie der Künste in München machte sich Erhardt einen Namen als Porträt- und Genremaler. 1876 erhielt er die Ernennung zum Hofmaler des Hauses Württemberg in Stuttgart.

Guter Gesamteindruck. Oberflächenverschmutzung, Bildränder rahmungsbedingt leicht ber., stellenweise das Motiv nicht störende harmonische Frühschwundrisse, hier und da fleckige Firnis, Keilrahmen min. nach recto durchdrückend, u.r. schwache Druckstellen mit daraus resultierender Farbabhebung und Farbverlusten (ca. bis 3 cm), vereinzelt kl. Farbfehlstellen (ca. 1 mm bis 3 cm), partiell winzige Flecken (ca. 1 bis 3 mm). Ursprünglich wohl für eine Rahmung mit abgerundeten Ecken konzipiert, daher Bildränder und -ecken nur grundiert.

After studying with the court painter Joseph Anton von Gegenbaur in Stuttgart and with Johann Gottfried Brücke or Wilhelm Brücke in Berlin around 1844 as well as at the Königliche Akademie der Künste in Munich in 1849, Erhardt made a name for himself as a portrait and genre painter. In 1876 he was appointed court painter to the House of Württemberg in Stuttgart.

Condition report:
Good overall impression. Surface soiling, margins slightly rubbed from framing, here and there harmonious white shrinking cracks that do not disturb the theme, somewhat spotted varnish, stretcher minimally pushing through to recto, faint pressure mark lower right with resulting lifting of the upper paint layer and paint loss (up to 3 cm), isolated small spots of paint loss (approx. 1 mm to 3 cm), partially tiny stains (approx. 1 to 3 mm). Originally probably designed for framing with rounded corners, therefore edges and corners only primed.
