Provenance : John Hicks 1663 (signature on first title); William Hartnoll (16th-century signature on verso of second title, which also on recto has a contemporary cost of 6 shillings 8 pence); John, 4th Marquess of Bute bookplate. FIRST EDITION OF VOLUME I, issue with catchwords as STC 2854.2, and E.J. Devereux, Renaissance English translations of Erasmus (1983) 26.4.1, but final gathering of Acts signed O8. Second edition of vol.II with index by Thomas Norton; STC 2866; Devereux 26.5.3. Cf. Herbert Historical Catalogue of Printed Editions of the English Bible no.72. The first volume was translated at the behest of Queen Catherine Parr, with a dedication to her, following the preface addressed to Edward VI. The editor was Nicholas Udall, and he was assisted by Thomas Key and Princess Mary, who translated the Gospel of John. The second volume was edited and mainly translated by Myles Coverdale, assisted by John Old. It also contains Leo Judd's Paraphrase of Revelation. The index by Norton was only added to this second edition. The edition of the first volume was very large, possibly 20,000 copies, as it had been ordered that each church in England should keep a copy. Of the second volume however, probably fewer than 6000 copies were printed. (2)
