Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards (leather renewed). Provenance: Capt. Barford (signature on title); George Clinton Fairchild Williams (bookplate). Second edition of vol. 1, FIRST EDITIONS of the remaining. "Containing many interesting particulars relative to the Catabaw, Cherokee, Chickesaw, Delaware, and other tribes of Indians" (Sabin). The text provides a history of the French and Indian War, with considerable material on the war in North America. This detailed work contains extracts from original source material and journals of the time. Many excellent engraved portraits of military leaders include Sir William Johnson William Pitt Generals Townshend, Kingsley, Wolfe, Montcalm, Amherst, and Lord Viscount Howe, Admirals Pocock, Boscawen, Hawke, Saunders and Keppel. The folding maps include several of the British North American colonies, a plan of the siege of Quebec, the West Indies, etc. The present copy has 40 plates as called for in the list of plates (some references call for 41).
