English School (mid 19th century) Portrait of an elderly lady with her daughter Full length in an interior Watercolour The letter in the daughter's hand inscribed to 'Mrs Cotton Etwall near Derby' Inscribed Mrs Stewart on reverse 68 x 47 cm (26 3/4 x 18 1/2 in)family repute this picture was painted to celebrate the marriage of Miss Marian Frances Cotton of Etwall Hall, Derby to General Charles Thornton Stewart in 1873 (hence the portrait of Charles I on the wall). She was born in 1834 and was the daughter of Charles Evelyn Cotton of Etwall and Frances Maria Cotton (the elderly woman seated in the portrait). Marian Frances died without issue and the portrait descended to her neice Louisa Stella Cotton of Etwall who married Colonel Walter Jervis.
